A comfort read with real teeth
Our host recommended this one and I'm grateful she did. The dialogue is doing real work here; characters reveal themselves through what they avoid saying. It does take fifty pages to settle into its rhythm. It sparked our longest discussion of the year.

Tender and unsentimental at once
I read the first chapter standing in my kitchen and never sat down. Every secondary character feels like they have a life off the page. A slightly tighter edit in the second act would have made it perfect. Easily a highlight of my reading list.

A rare book that earns its ending
I've been recommending it to everyone who asks what I'm reading. The dialogue is doing real work here; characters reveal themselves through what they avoid saying. My only quibble: a few threads resolve a touch too neatly. I'm hoping the author writes more like this.
